Custodial Services at StFX is committed to maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming spaces for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Our daily routines and scheduled deep cleaning reflect our dedication to high standards of hygiene and care.

Here is what you can expect:

• Daily Service in Common Areas
  Communal spaces are cleaned every day, including the removal of garbage and recyclables to keep areas functional and pleasant.
• Washroom Sanitation
  All campus washrooms are cleaned and sanitized daily to support hygiene, health, and user comfort.
• Floor Care
  Hallways and high-traffic zones are swept and mopped regularly to ensure a clean and polished appearance.
• Weekly Deep Cleaning
  Showers and stairwells receive scheduled deep cleaning, typically on Tuesday and Wednesday, to maintain a fresh and welcoming environment.

Our team takes pride in delivering consistent, high-quality custodial service that supports a healthy living and learning experience across campus.

Private/communal office occupants are responsible for disposing of their own garbage and recyclable materials at designated sorting stations. Routine cleaning of personal work areas is the responsibility of the occupant (s). Custodial staff do, however, conduct regular floor sweeping to maintain baseline cleanliness without disrupting individual workspaces.

If deep cleaning is required, the custodial team must be notified in advance by emailing @email to schedule the service.

Before any cleaning takes place, all personal items must be removed from desks, shelves, and other surfaces. Custodial staff will not move or handle personal belongings. Your cooperation ensures a respectful and efficient cleaning process for everyone involved.

Please note that all occupants within residence are responsible for the upkeep of their dwelling. This includes managing the disposal of their own garbage and recyclable materials and keeping their living spaces clean and tidy. However, if they require any specific assistance or additional cleaning services, they are welcome to notify the residence life team (@email) to further assist them. This will ensure a well-maintained and pleasant living environment for everyone within the university campus.

Each year, the custodial team conducts annual project work, which encompasses essential tasks such as stripping and finishing tile floors, as well as deep cleaning of carpets and upholstery. To minimize any disruption to the regular academic year routine, these projects are typically scheduled during the summer months. In early June of each year, the custodial team will provide a detailed schedule for the upcoming projects. This proactive approach allows all stakeholders to plan accordingly, ensuring seamless and efficient execution of the necessary maintenance and cleaning tasks.

As stewards of the built environment at St. Francis Xavier University, Custodial Services is committed to supporting sustainability through daily practices that reduce waste, conserve resources, and promote long-term environmental well-being. Our team plays an active role in advancing StFX’s institutional priorities around climate responsibility, while continuing to deliver safe, clean and accessible campus space.

At StFX, sustainability is not an add on, it is embedded in how we care for our campus. We use certified green cleaning products as part of our everyday custodial practices, ensuring the health of our community and the environment. Our soap and paper towel dispensers are also managed with end-of-life responsibility in mind; we partner with suppliers to ensure these fixtures are made with recycled parts and not discarded to our local landfill. 

• Campus-wide Recycling Support: We help manage and maintain recycling collection points in academic, administration and residential buildings, ensuring proper sorting and minimizing landfill contribution.
• Use of Certified Green Products: Our cleaning supplies are carefully selected to meet environmental standards; using green-certified products helps us reduce our ecological footprint while maintaining a healthy campus.

Additionally, at StFX, our custodial hardware is selected with sustainability in mind. Many of our cleaning machines are battery-operated, reducing emissions and minimizing energy use across campus. Additionally, our soap and paper towel dispensers are made from 100 percent recyclable materials, supporting a circular lifecycle approach.
