About Engineering

Engineering is a creative and multidisciplinary endeavour that exemplifies human ingenuity at its best. Here at StFX, the history of humans and the history of engineering are one and the same, and the dedicated Engineering faculty have structured the program around that very idea. Much of the history of people is, in effect, the history of engineering, as our creative utilization of resources remains strictly interwoven with our day-to-day lives. Everything we do, touch, use, or imagine has or will require the expertise of an engineer…and that could be YOU!      

Why Study Engineering at StFX?

At StFX, we have experienced faculty members who are all professional engineers and who will work with you both inside and outside of the classroom and laboratory. Our class sizes are similar to those you experienced in high school and so the transition to StFX will be uncomplicated. We believe in a collaborative atmosphere and have strong connections with other science departments and areas across campus so we all work together as a team. This results in our students being highly successful as they transition to Dalhousie to complete their studies and as they enter their careers. 

As a student, you have options – you can complete the Diploma in 2 or 3 years or complete the Diploma and a Bachelor of Science degree in 4 years of study. Once you complete the Diploma at StFX, you are eligible to complete your Bachelor of Engineering degree at Dalhousie or at other institutions. 

Engineering at StFX offers:  

  • A two-year Diploma in Engineering  
  • A three-year Diploma in Engineering (the same courses spread over three years)  
  • A four-year Diploma in Engineering and Bachelor of Science degree. This is a combination Diploma in Engineering and B.Sc. in a science area (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Human Kinetics)  

First Year at a Glance

As a first-year engineering student, you will explore components of engineering; design, graphics, statics, calculus, physics, chemistry, writing, and more. The result is a varied education that prepares students for the many branches of engineering available to them in the working world. First-year enrolment is limited to about 65 students, and some classes and laboratories have between 20 to 40 students with the purpose of providing a comfortable learning environment.

  • ENGR 121 Calculus 1 for Engineers 
  • ENGR 128 Engineering Design and Graphics
  • ENGR 147 Engineering Computer Programming
  • PHYS 121 Physics for the Physical Sciences & Engineers

In the second semester (Winter) January – April:

  • CHEM 122 Principles of Chemistry II
  • ENGR 122 Calculus 2 for Engineers
  • ENGR 132 Technical Communications
  • ENGR 136 Statics
  • PHYS 122 Physics for the Physical Sciences & Engineers II
  • Writing course (See Academic Calendar)
