About the MACS Program
StFX is pleased to offer a course-based Master of Applied Computer Science (MACS) program, completed over 2 years of full-time study. It is open to students with an undergraduate major in Computer Science, or the equivalent combination of courses. Students will take courses from various computer science sub-disciplines so they will be prepared to work in a variety of professional roles. Students will also have the option to complete an elective, project-based course in a workplace environment or a co-operative education option.
Why pursue a Master of Applied Computer Science at StFX?
StFX’s Computer Science program is recognized as the top-ranked program of its kind in Atlantic Canada (Maclean’s Magazine October 2019). It has earned its ranking in part due to the department’s field-weighted citation impact index rank, a measure of research output, for which the group is ranked first in the country. In the Master of Applied Computer Science program, students take advanced courses that will equip them well for working in industry. Alongside the course-based program, the department offers a thesis-based Master of Science in Computer Science and undergraduate programs, which contribute to a lively community of computer scientists working and studying together.

Admission Requirements
- 4-year degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) with a minimum average of 70%. (Typically students will have completed at least 12 undergraduate courses in computer science. See the list of required courses here.
- Evidence of English proficiency if English is not your first language: Preferred test - IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.
Note that graduate programs demand very strong English language skills. While IELTS 6.5 (no bands less than 6.0) is the minimum requirement, a higher IELTS score may strengthen the application.
Application information
Application Deadline: May 1 for International students.

- The following documents will be required within the application:
- Statement of Intent. This statement should be 250 to 500 words outlining your qualifications for graduate school, your research interests, career goals, and reasons for applying to StFX specifically.
- Degree certificate – if studies have been completed.
- Resume/CV
- English proficiency test if your first language is not English
- Reference names and emails
- Reference letters (2) – please provide the referee names in your application and they will be emailed a link for submission.
- Official transcripts: Submit an official transcript from each post-secondary institution attended. Transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution to the Admissions Office by mail or an official school email. Any transcript submitted directly by the student must be received in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution. Graduates of StFX do not need to provide a copy of their transcript from StFX. Transcripts in a language other than English should be provided in their original language, along with a certified translation into English. Your application will not be reviewed until all official transcripts are received.
Applications will not be reviewed until all supporting documents are received and the application fee is paid.
Co-op Option
Students in the MACS program can apply to complete Co-operative Education (Co-op). Co-op offers paid work experience for students interested in developing a career in various areas within computer science fields, integrating work experience in their field of interest within their academic studies while earning 6 credits towards their MACS. Students complete professional development seminars and workshops offered through the Co-op department prior to work term placement. This will prepare students to be professional, committed for the challenges of work term placements, and ensure that good relations with employers are fostered right from the start. Space is limited.
