Internship

The PGOV Internship Program integrates students’ university studies with a relevant paid or volunteer placement that provides meaningful exposure to work in public policy and governance. Internships give students the opportunity to apply the concepts, ideas, and skills developed in the classroom in a real-world setting, while gaining professional experience and building networks and connections that can support future opportunities.

The internship is open to all students who have taken courses in the PGOV program. Students generally complete their internships between late April and early September, following their third year of study. Placements are a minimum of eight weeks. The internship experience culminates in PGOV 451, a 3-credit course that allows students to reflect on, analyze, and build upon what they learned through their placement.

Past placements have included positions with all levels of government, NGOs, Indigenous organizations, law firms, think tanks, research projects, and private-sector organizations. In a number of cases, students have leveraged their internship experience and the connections they developed into employment opportunities following the internship.

Financial support for unpaid internships and expenses associated with relocating for a placement is available through the J. Armand Bombardier Student Internship Award.
