Public Policy and Governance

The Public Policy and Governance (PGOV) program at St. Francis Xavier University offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate education focused on public policy, governance, and public leadership. One of only a few programs of its kind in Canada, PGOV helps students understand how governance works from the local to the international level while developing the knowledge, experience, and capabilities needed to address today’s complex public policy challenges.

In a welcoming and engaging learning environment, students build the analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills that prepare them for careers in policy analysis, public administration, law, journalism, politics, emergency management, the non-profit sector, and many other fields. PGOV is committed to fostering thoughtful dialogue across different perspectives, helping students learn from one another, find common ground, and develop practical solutions to real-world challenges.

 

Students benefit from small class sizes, experiential learning opportunities, and professors who know them personally and are invested in their success. Beyond the classroom, students connect with decision-makers and policy experts who join us as visiting fellows and speakers and enjoy access to a wide range of opportunities through the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government. They also develop practical experience through our internship program, community engagement initiatives, and research activities, working alongside faculty and partner organizations on projects ranging from archival investigations in Washington and Ottawa, to interviews and surveys of political leaders, to emergency response field work in the Canadian Arctic.
