Welcome to the St. Francis Xavier University Rankin School of Nursing scholarships and awards page. Here you’ll find a comprehensive list of funding opportunities available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN), Accelerated Option, and LPN–BScN programs.

Note: The number and value of scholarships offered may vary from year to year, depending on the availability of funds.

Rankin School of Nursing Entrance Award

All incoming 2025–2026 BScN students will receive a $500 Rankin School of Nursing Entrance Award to help with first-year expenses. The award will be automatically applied to your student account and can be used for course materials, on-campus meals, housing, and more.

This award is our way of saying thank you for choosing the Rankin School of Nursing and for contributing to the health and well-being of our communities.

  • Specific application forms, requirements, and deadlines

Please review each scholarship listed carefully to ensure you meet all criteria. By submitting your application, you ensure that you’ll be considered for funding opportunities that support your academic success and professional development throughout the nursing program.

Mary Ann Chisholm Nursing Award

This award is for first-year BScN students. Eligible students must be from Pictou, Antigonish, or Guysborough counties, demonstrate a strong aptitude for nursing, show leadership ability or potential, have financial need, maintain Dean’s List standing, and commit to the professional values of nursing (CNA). 

Application Period: February 15th - March 15th

Freshman Radcliff Award

This award is for first-year BScN students. Eligible students should demonstrate academic improvement (not necessarily top grades), actively participate in the student nursing society or community outreach, engage in class discussions, and exhibit excellent interpersonal skills.

Indigenous Student Mentor Award

This award is for senior Indigenous BScN students (any year beyond first). Eligible students demonstrate a commitment to mentorship of fellow Indigenous students. The recipient is selected by the Indigenous Nurses Education Committee in consultation with the Indigenous Student Advisor.

No application process.

African Descent Student Award in Leadership

This award is for senior BScN students. Eligible students demonstrate continual growth in the nursing program, community involvement, mentorship, and leadership.

Second-Year Awards

Jo M. Brown Scholarship

This award is for students entering their third year of the BScN program. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and a strong commitment to the standards of nursing promoted by the School of Nursing. High-level performance may allow for renewal, and the award may be reassessed at the University President’s discretion.

Application Period: February 15th - March 15th

Margaret Martel Farrell Sophomore Award

This award is for second-year BScN students. Preference is given to applicants from Eastern Nova Scotia (Pictou, Antigonish, Guysborough, and Cape Breton). Eligible students demonstrate leadership potential, superior academic grades, strong practice performance, and a commitment to the professional values of nursing (CNA). High-level performance in the third year may allow for renewal.

Application Period: October 15th - November 15th

Canadian Nurses Foundation (CNF) Scholarship

Baccalaureate (BScN 4-year stream)

Must have completed a minimum of 4 courses (minimum 3 in nursing courses), this does not include courses currently in progress. Must have a minimum of 2 semesters left to complete after applying (current semester does not apply to semesters remaining).

Accelerated Option (BScN 2-year stream)

Must have completed a minimum of 3 courses. Must be currently enrolled and actively studying in the program in which you are applying funding for. If you are applying in your final semester, you are not eligible if you have received a CNF award for the previous year.

Note: Accelerated Option/Advanced Standing Degree Programs begin at varying times throughout the year so completion of semesters will vary.

Evie Grew Maternal-Child Nursing Award

This award is for students entering their third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program. Eligible students must be full-time in the traditional 4-year on-campus program, demonstrate caring, leadership, volunteerism, and community outreach, maintain a minimum 70% average, and demonstrate a passion for maternal-child and family nursing.

Application Period: February 15th - March 15th

Rovers Family Memorial Scholarship

This award is for third-year BScN students. Eligible students must have high academic achievement over the previous three years (or two years for Post-Degree students), demonstrate superior ability in community and institutional nursing practice, actively participate in the Nursing Society, and commit to professional caring and advancing nursing goals. Preference may be given to applicants interested in international health and development.

This award is for students entering their third year of the BScN program. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and a strong commitment to the standards of nursing promoted by the School of Nursing. Dr. Winston Jackson Honours Third Year Award

One award for a Junior student with the highest-grade average in the Honours program. Students will also need to submit an abstract and budget expense sheet. Students who receive external funding are not eligible for the award.

This award is for fourth-year or Accelerated/LPN-BScN students entering senior semesters (7–8). Recipients must demonstrate qualities congruent with those of the recipient and the VON - respect, compassion, excellence, community dedication and financial need will also be taken into consideration.

This award is for fourth-year BScN students. Eligible students demonstrate leadership within the Nursing Society, mentorship of fellow students through team-building initiatives, and commitment to the standards of nursing promoted by the School of Nursing.

This award is for fourth-year BScN students. Eligible students demonstrate leadership ability, commitment to professional values of nursing, and excellence in nursing practice.
