About the Project
Feeling connected and taking part in community life are important for health and well-being as we age. This study explores how community-based organizations in Antigonish, Guysborough, and Pictou counties support the social participation of newcomers aged 55+.
By hearing from people who work and volunteer with these organizations, we are learning what is working well, what makes participation harder, and where there are opportunities for change. What we learn will help inform practical tools and resources that community organizations can use to support more welcoming and inclusive communities.
Project Staff
Eleanor Grier
Eleanor Grier is a Master of Public Health candidate and Research Affiliate with the Centre on Aging and Disability Justice at St. Francis Xavier University. Her work focuses on connection and inclusion in rural communities.
Eleanor works in newcomer health, supporting internationally educated health professionals as they settle in Nova Scotia and transition into the healthcare workforce. She also has experience supporting older adults and people with disabilities in community settings.
Her research brings these areas together, with a focus on newcomer inclusion and social participation in rural communities.
Emma Elliot, Research Assistant
Emma Elliott is an undergraduate student at St. Francis Xavier University.
Emma is completing a directed study in the department of Sociology on aging, well-being, and rural civil society. This study will examine the role of rural nonprofit organizations in supporting the social inclusion, community participation, and well-being of aging adults with disabilities.
Emma is continuing her work as a research assistant with the Centre on Aging and Disability Justice. She additionally works with community partners in the GROW – Social Participation collective impact initiative bringing programming to aging adults in Guysborough, Antigonish, and Pictou communities.
