Understanding Your Admission Decision

Admission is Competitive

Deferred 

If you receive a deferred decision, you are not yet academically qualified for admission to Nursing. Your application will continue to be assessed as updated grades are received.

Waitlisted

If you receive a waitlisted decision, you are academically eligible for Nursing but have not yet met the current competitive average being used for assessment. Your application will continue to be considered if and when seats become available.

Assessment Process

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (4-Year) program is highly competitive due to strong demand and limited enrolment. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission.

In recent years, competitive admission averages have generally ranged from 88% to 96%. Competitive averages vary from year to year depending on the applicant pool and available capacity.

There are approximately 100 seats available in the 4-Year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Additional seats may be available at the discretion of the School of Nursing.

Preference for admission to all Nursing programs is given to residents of Nova Scotia. All other domestic and international applicants receive equal consideration for admission.

Keep Your Grades Up to Date 

We assess students for admission to Nursing on a rolling basis until the program reaches capacity. For this reason, you must send us revised transcripts as your grades are updated. This ensures that you receive ongoing consideration for Nursing if and when seats are available.

For all applicants outside Nova Scotia, transcripts and course lists for courses currently in progress must be sent to Admissions@stfx.ca.

Important Dates

• After February 1: 
  • Assessments completed after February 1 will only be based on final first-semester transcripts.

If you have not been admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing by March 3, 2027, you must submit your final first-semester grades by this date to remain under consideration.

If you have not received an offer and your final first-semester grades have not been submitted by March 3, 2027, your application to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing will no longer be valid and no further assessment will occur.

Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics or Bachelor of Arts in Human Kinetics

Waitlisted 

If you receive a waitlisted decision, you are academically eligible for HKIN but have not yet met the current competitive average being used for assessment; the program has reached capacity. Your application will continue to be considered if and when seats become available.

The Human Kinetics programs are highly competitive due to strong demand and limited enrolment. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission.

We assess students for admission to Human Kinetics on a rolling basis until the program reaches capacity.

Bachelor of Science in Applied Forensic Psychology or Bachelor of Arts in Applied Forensic Psychology

The Applied Forensic Psychology programs are highly competitive due to strong demand and limited enrolment.

Admission involves two stages of assessment:

1. Academic Review – Admissions 

The Admissions team first reviews your application to determine whether you meet the academic requirements for the program.

2. Program Review – Department of Psychology 

Academically qualified applications are subsequently reviewed by faculty in the Department of Psychology, who assess non-academic factors to determine program suitability.

Employment and/or volunteer experience is a mandatory component of applying to this program. 

Understanding Your Admission Decision

Deferred 

If you receive a deferred decision, you are not yet academically qualified for admission to AFP. Your application will continue to be assessed as updated grades are received. Once you meet the academic requirements for the program, your application will be eligible for review by the Department of Psychology.

Waitlisted 

If you receive a waitlisted decision, you are academically eligible for AFP but have not yet been admitted to the program. Your application will remain under consideration if a space becomes available; however, movement from the waitlist is typically limited.

Second-Choice Program 

If you receive a decision for your second-choice program, this means either:

• you are not academically eligible for the Applied Forensic Psychology program to which you applied; or 
• the Department of Psychology did not accept your Applied Forensic Psychology application.

We assess students for admission to Applied Forensic Psychology on an ongoing basis until the program reaches capacity.

You must send us revised transcripts as your grades are updated. This ensures that you receive ongoing consideration for Applied Forensic Psychology if seats remain available at the time of assessment.

Admission Deferred

A deferred decision means that you do not currently meet the admission requirements for one or both of the programs listed on your application. However, based on the information available, you may be able to meet the requirements by successfully completing courses currently in progress and/or by adding or changing your enrolled courses.

You may be deferred for your first-choice program but receive an offer of admission to your second-choice program. If you did not select a second-choice program, you can add one by submitting the Application Change Form.

Your decision letter will identify any admission requirements you are currently missing. We encourage you to review the admission requirements for your selected program(s) carefully.

What can you do next?

If you are able to meet the missing requirements by adding or changing courses, you should update your course enrolment accordingly.

If you do not plan to add or change your courses, you may choose to change your program selection to one for which you meet the admission requirements. You can do this through the Application Change Form.

If you choose to keep your original program selection(s), your application will remain active. We will reassess your application when we receive an updated transcript containing new academic information, including updated grades for courses currently in progress.

Scholarship information

Please note the entrance scholarship value included in this letter of offer is an estimate based on the Grade 11 and/or in-progress Grade 12 marks used to assess your application if you are still enrolled in courses. We use five grades for your admission average, which includes grades from required courses for your selected program, plus the highest grades we can use from your electives for your program.  

The final value of the entrance scholarship awarded and applied to your student account will be based on final marks for the five Grade 12 courses used to meet admission requirements for your program. If you are still enrolled in courses, it is important to continue working hard to keep your marks high so you can receive the highest possible entrance scholarship. If a student’s final average falls below 85% an entrance scholarship will not be awarded.  

To receive a scholarship, students must submit their final high school transcript by August 15 preceding a September start.

To maintain an entrance scholarship, students must achieve a minimum average of 80% at StFX in the Fall/Winter terms combined. This scholarship is tenable at StFX over four consecutive years of study.
