St. Francis Xavier University recognizes that after being admitted you may experience circumstances that may warrant a request to defer your admission. If you are unable to start in the term you were admitted, you may be eligible to defer your acceptance, on a one-time basis, to a future term up to a maximum of one year from your original start term. In order to defer, you must also have confirmed your seat in your program by way of submitting your confirmation payment and we must have received your final transcript.
If you have been accepted into one of the following programs, you will not be able to defer, and will need to re-apply for the next admission cycle:
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Applied Forensic Psychology
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Accelerated 2-Year
- LPN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Masters of Applied Computer Science
Key Dates and Deadlines:
- The deadline to defer your admissions for the September term will be approximately 4 weeks prior to the first day of classes, the exact date will be posted here.
- The deadline to defer your admissions for the January term will be approximately 4 weeks prior to the first day of classes, the exact date will be posted here.

Who is eligible to apply for a deferral?
- You must submit your final high school transcript (high school students) or your most recent final post-secondary transcript (transfer students) to admissions before the start of your original intake term and you must meet your admission requirements for your program.
- You must have confirmed your seat to your program for the original intake.
- During your deferral year, you cannot complete more than 6 credits at another post-secondary institution.
What's next?
- If approved for deferral, the confirmation fee paid will be transferred to your account for the following year.
- Residence deposits are refunded before June 1; after June 1 the deposit will be transferred to the next year. Please note that no refund will be issued if you decide not to attend next year.
- If your application to defer from September to September is approved, you will receive a new offer of admission for the new entering term by the end of November.
- If your application to defer from September to January is approved, you will receive a new offer of admission for the new entering term within two weeks of submitting your form.
- If your application to defer from January to September is approved, you will receive a new offer of admission for the new entering term in January.
- International students will require this new offer of admission to apply for a study permit.
- If your request to defer is not approved, your file will remain active unless you notify Admissions of your intention to withdraw the application.
Deferral of Residence
- A deferral of residence can be made for up to one year. The $400 deposit will remain on your account to hold the room for the following academic year.

Deferral of Scholarships (high school and mature students only)
- If you received a National entrance award, scholarships awarded to students with an admission average of 85% or above based on first semester grade 12 grades, your scholarship can be deferred to January at half the value or to September at full value. The final value of your entrance award will be based on your final grade 12 grades.
- If you received a Major scholarship (including Schwartz, Public Policy and Governance, and Deveau), awarded to students based on competitive application, you will not be eligible to defer your scholarship. You will be eligible to re-apply for Major Scholarships (only if you are deferring to September) and you will receive information on how to do this with your new offer of admission for September.
