Bachelor of Science in Physics with Diploma in Engineering

Engineering and physics can be combined easily because the skills taught in both programs are similar. In engineering, a more practical approach is pursued, where the laws of nature are applied to design new technology. In physics, the laws themselves are investigated, which leads to the discovery of new phenomena. Combining your Diploma in engineering with a physics degree gives you the best of both worlds.

Benefits for Engineering Students

Physicists use similar methods as engineers, but the focus is on understanding nature and expanding knowledge. This is a different mindset, which will increase your creative potential. Studying physics will also make you aware of phenomena that you may never see in an engineering program, and therefore not be able to use.

You will also become aware of the latest trends in science. Recent physics research focuses on phenomena that will shape tomorrow's technology. Examples that we teach in our courses include quantum computing, superconducting circuits, novel materials such as graphene, and why one needs General Relativity to make GPS networks work.

Plus, of course, there is the fascination of learning how black holes, quarks, or the Big Bang actually work. Like engineering, physics isn't always easy but deals with intriguing concepts.

How it works

There are three ways to combine a Diploma in Engineering with a physics degree:

• A 3-Year Bachelor of Science with Concentration in Physics
•  A 4-Year Major in Physics
• A 4-Year Advanced Major in Physics

In short, these options have the following content:

• In all options, Year 1 is similar to the normal first year for a Diploma, except that you can take 5 courses per term instead of 6. 
• In Year 2 of all options, you will take PHYS 201, PHYS 241, and PHYS 242.
• Year 3 and 4 will generally contain more advanced physics courses. Compared to the 3-Year BSc, the Major program has more specific courses and also open electives. The Advanced Major has even more specific courses and includes a research project.
