Message from the Alumni Association President

Hello fellow Xaverians,

Headshot of Michael Gillis
StFX Alumni Association President Michael Gillis '87

As I enter my final year as President of the StFX Alumni Association, I find myself reflecting on what it truly means to be part of this community. It is more than a degree on a wall. It is a lifelong relationship, and like any good relationship, it asks something of us.

That something comes in three forms: time, talent, and treasure.

Here is what I have learned after years of watching our alumni in action: giving back is not something Xaverians have to be talked into. It is simply who we are. Something about this place, the scale of it, the values it instills, the friendships it forges, produces people who turn around and give back. Not out of obligation. Out of genuine affection for what X gave them.

I have been lucky to watch this play out up close.

Time

Diker Campbell

Diker Campbell (’58) showed me what it looks like to give your time generously and joyfully, whether hosting Alumni filled dinners in his home or turning up wherever he was needed. Diker was inducted into the StFX Alumni Hall of Honour in 1996 which is a fitting tribute to a man who gave decades of himself to this university and to every Xaverian lucky enough to know him.

Talent

John Caplice

John Caplice (’87) channeled his talent into building the Point After Club and transforming the football program into something sustainable and lasting. John is proof that one person with the right skills, and the will to use them, can change the trajectory of an entire program.

Treasure

Jeff Monroe

Don and Jeff Munroe (’58 and ’86) created Flourish at X together, a fund built on a shared belief that access to education is worth protecting. Jeff led the way and made sure his father was part of it. That tells you something about the both of them. Don has since passed, but the fund carries his name and his values forward. Jeff is a friend I admire on more levels than I can list here and watching him reach a significant lifetime giving milestone in the pages of the Alumni News was one of those moments that makes you want to be better. I am still working toward that giving milestone.

Three alumni. Three different expressions of the same Xaverian instinct.

You do not need to do all three. You need only find your entry point. If you have time, volunteer. If you have a skill, share it. If you have the capacity to give financially, even a small gift matters more than you know.

It has been an honour to serve. I hope to spend this final year making the most of the time, talent, and treasure that all of you bring to X.

Hail and Health,

Mike Gillis (’87)
President, StFX Alumni Association
