StFX computer science students excel at Science Atlantic regional conference

Students from the StFX Department of Computer Science recently had an impressive performance at Science Atlantic’s 2023 Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science conference hosted by the University of Prince Edward Island on October 13-14.

StFX sent seven students to the Atlantic conference and came back with two awards. 

StFX students Ethan Heavey and Xinyi Li presented their research at the conference. Mr. Heavey won first place for the computer science graduate presentations.

Additionally, StFX had seven student programmers, split into three teams, in the competitive programming competition. 

Out of 22 registered entries, the StFX team of Noah Murrant and AJ Hinman obtained a third place finish.

Additionally, the teams of Ethan Heavey and Bhavpreet Arneja came in fifth place, and Cole MacDonald, Sammy Brooks and Xinyi Li finished in eighth place. 

Programming coach was Dr. Milton King.

Along with Dr. King, attending faculty at the conference included Dr. Taylor Smith and Dr. Man Lin.

“We were able to have a strong presence at this year’s conference thanks to the support of StFX and the generous donation from the River Philip Foundation,” Dr. King says.
