Dr. Wellington Sousa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Adult Education at St. Francis Xavier University. His research program and community-engaged practice lie at the intersection of adult education and community development and seek to foster community-led change across a range of issues and geographic contexts. His work focuses particularly on Asset-Based Community-Led Development (ABCD) processes, participatory methodologies and community-based research facilitation, the formation of community-based researchers and adult educators, community–university partnerships, and adult education theory.

His broader community-engaged work includes collaborations in Canada, Brazil, and several East African countries, including Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Burundi. These collaborations draw on ABCD and related participatory approaches in areas such as feminist movement-building, organizational learning, community-led tourism, agroecology, the incubation of solidarity economy enterprises and cooperatives, and the well-being of community-based practitioners. His research and community-engaged work have been supported by Global Affairs Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and the Change Lab Action Research Initiative (CLARI).
