Exploring exotic phases of matter with dipolar quantum gases
Wyatt Kirkby (University of Heidelberg)
In this presentation, we will explore some of the exotic phases of matter driven by quantum effects, from Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity, leading to the recently-discovered supersolid phase. Somewhat paradoxical, supersolids remarkably combine the rigid periodic order of crystals with the dissipationless flow of superfluids. We will see how this state of matter has been realized using ultracold gases of highly-magnetic atoms, in particular the DyLab in Heidelberg. On the theoretical side, we will also explore some of the rich properties of supersolids and outline the vast area of research potential they open.
