The work of IUPAP and of its commission on Physics for Development.

Michael Steinitz (StFX)

I will discuss the work of IUPAP, the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics, and, in particular, the work of Commission 13 of IUPAP which is devoted to Physics for Development, i.e. for physics in developing countries.  IUPAP exists to foster international cooperation in physics and countries are members (not individuals).  Canada is a member and I am privileged to be serving on Commission 13.  An outgrowth of the work of Commission 13 is my work on the proposal for an African Light Source, similar to our Canadian Light Source in Saskatchewan.  I will brag about the amazing capabilities of such a machine for physics, biology, archaeology and many other fields.
