Saxophone/Woodwinds Studio

You will find studying saxophone/woodwinds at StFX to be an immersive experience. We will take a deep dive into the topics of sound production, time, technique, repertoire, reading, and very importantly the ability to improvise fluently. We aim to provide you with the skills needed to function in most of any situations, allowing you to go into the music world with ability and confidence. Many of our past students have moved on to be performers, band educators, and graduate school attendees. 

Audition for Saxophone/Woodwinds

Audition Requirements (except transfer students):

  1. Play a medium-tempo jazz standard (example: Now’s the Time, Blue Bossa, Autumn Leaves).  Play the melody and your improvised solo over the chord changes. If you are auditioning live, please bring a play-along recording of the songs you wish to play. 
  2. There are no technical requirements, although it is advisable to be able to play all major scales. 
  3. Live auditions may include sight reading. 

Audition requirements for transfer students:

  1. Play one of the following standards: “All The Things You Are,” “All of Me,” “Solar.”  Play the melody and an improvised solo. 
  2. All Major Scales, Melodic (Jazz) minor Scales. 
  3. Perform a transcription of your choice.
