Piano Studio

At StFX, learning piano is a holistic journey towards developing your musicianship and artistry. We take a comprehensive approach that covers various aspects of music and piano study, including technique development, improving listening skills, exploring melody, harmony, rhythm, repertoire building, and improvisation. Our curriculum also focuses on mindfulness and self-awareness, empowering you to unlock your full potential as an artist and musician, and prepare you to embark on your personal path in the dynamic and diverse field of music. Our personalized, one-on-one lessons are scheduled weekly, and customized to suit your unique requirements. 

Audition for Piano

Auditions for new students should include two contrasting pieces, done solo or within a group. At least one piece must be a jazz-style composition and include improvisation.

Demonstration of technique shall also be prepared, and include major, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales demonstrated in at least 3 different keys, major and minor triads in solid and broken form, as well as arpeggios.

Piano requirements for transfer students are as follows: 

  1. Technique 
    1. Major scales, Melodic minor and Harmonic minor scales in all 12 keys 
    2. Major and Minor Triads in all inversions, solid and broken form 
  2. Play one classical etude of your choice demonstrating performance technique. 
  3. Play one jazz standard of your choice, demonstrating an ability to play the melody and chords as well as improvising over the form of the piece. 
  4. In-person auditions will also include some basic questions on chord and scale knowledge, as well as a brief sight-reading test.
