Biography

Antoinette Karuna is a filmmaker and fiber artist with a focus on rug hooking and weaving. She holds a BA in Communication Studies (specialization in Film Production) with a Minor in Creative Writing from Concordia University, Montreal. Parallel to her art practice and to teaching at StFX, she works as a freelance writer and editor.

Karuna’s films have screened nationally and internationally at film festivals—including at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival—and have received DVD and theatrical distribution. She has won awards for Best Original Screenplay at the Malibu International Film Festival, the Jury Award at the San Diego Women Film Festival, and 1st Prize for Best Short Screenplay from SODEC and the Festival du nouveau cinema screenwriting competition Cours écrire ton court.

She has received grants from the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC), the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ), and the Canada Council for the Arts.
