Charles V. Keating, C.M., LL.D.

An exceptional entrepreneur and philanthropist, Charles Keating was a proud alumnus of St. Francis Xavier University and an important player in the economic development of Atlantic Canada. He built a variety of flourishing businesses and played a pioneering role in bringing cable television to his province. Also renowned for his remarkable record of community service, he manifested a genuine desire to give back to society. He made generous contributions both financially and in the form of his expertise, energy and enthusiasm to many organizations and charities, including StFX University. As founding chair of the Nova Scotia Hospital Foundation, he helped raise public awareness and funds for the treatment of mental illness. An inspiration to many, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2003. Mr. Keating kept a special place in his heart for StFX, where he earned a Diploma in Engineering in 1958, and credited the university for preparing him for success. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from StFX in May 2000. Charles Keating died November 22, 2005 at the age of 72.
