About English

The English Department at StFX is characterized by an effort to fuse current research with excellence in teaching to offer students courses and degree patterns that foreground the historical diversity and contemporary value of the broad skill set an English degree offers. With English, students can develop their communication, research, and writing skills all through the lens of fascinating literature across a host of periods, genres, and mediums.

English students are offered a wide variety of courses that survey a range of national literatures and historical periods; such analysis provides students with detailed examinations of the changing history, definitions, and function of literature, art, and culture. Students will develop as critical thinkers and writers, researchers, and active participants in our multifaceted intellectual and sociocultural environment.

Our faculty get to know their students by name and offer the kind of mentoring and one-on-one assistance that will help them achieve their full potential. There are also a host of extra-curricular activities available to complement your education, including literary conferences, the production of the literary journal The Antigonish Review, readings by visiting scholars, and more.

First Year at a Glance

Year one introduces you to English literature using a range of historical and cultural contexts, while focusing on writing skills, which are key to success at university. Courses are designed to introduce students to the principles and practices of logical analysis and critique, persuasive and argumentative writing, research methodology, as well as a wide range of fundamental skills that form the basis for students' future career paths.
