Learning at university draws on many of the skills you already have, but even so, it takes some time to learn how to succeed in your classes. This pillar of the Flourishing Foundations program will help you develop and enhance the learning skills and strategies you will need to be successful in your first year at StFX. Topics include time management, using a syllabus, using Moodle, academic integrity, academic regulations, studying, coping with stress, and how to connect with campus resources.

The six-week program developed by the Student Success Centre and the StFX Health and Counselling Centre is delivered by upper-year students. Registration is open to any first-year student at StFX, including incoming transfer students.

If you successfully complete the program, you will be invited to select one from a list of incentives. The list will include bonus marks in one of your courses that is participating in the program, and other academic incentives including an hour of free tutoring. Students who successfully complete the program will also be entered into a draw to win one of many prizes, including a kayaking trip and gift cards!

At the end of this program, you will be able to…

  • Identify and practice learning strategies that can enhance your academic performance.
  • Understand the resources available to assist you in developing the coping and resilience skills to maintain mental well-being during your studies.
  • Decide when and how to seek help with academic and personal matters.
  • Build connections with your peers and with campus support communities.

What will happen at X-ACT?

Students will learn about StFX academic and the opportunities that exist on campus.

Research shows that incoming students who make an early connection with staff and resources are more likely to succeed in their first year of study. You will have a chance to learn about the different resources and opportunities that will help make your academic journey successful.

Students will meet their peers & student leaders.

When you join us for X-ACT you will be assigned to a student leader who will facilitate your group workshop sessions. They will also spend time sharing information about the campus resources available to help you in first year and beyond.

X-ACT involves a number of activities that will offer you the chance to establish friendships, develop the knowledge and skills to succeed in first-year, and connect with peers.

What are the incentives?

Students who successfully complete the program by attending at least 5 of 6 sessions, will select ONE from a list of incentives.  They can either apply a grade incentive to one of their Fall term courses participating in the program, or they can select from a list of alternative incentives (e.g., 1 hour of free tutoring in a course of their choice). All students who successfully complete the program will also be entered into a prize draw.
