Particle Physics

Particle physics research primarily aims to understand the universe on a fundamental scale. Reaching that scale requires up-to-date technological advancement both in instruments and software. Experimental particle physics research is a collaborative effort, and tens of thousands of individual members work in teamwork at different institutions worldwide. StFX, the only undergraduate institute in Meritime and Canada with this opportunity for students to research experimental particle physics, is a member institute in two world-leading experiments:

  1. Belle II experiment at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in Japan: https://www.belle2.org/
  2. BaBar Experiment at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in the USA: https://babar.heprc.uvic.ca/

Students can work on a wide range of topics, including

  • Simulations
  • Data Analysis
  • Construct a Cloud Chamber
  • Properties of Cosmic Muons
  • Precision Standard Model parameters
  • Dark Sector and New Physics

Faculty members working on particle physics are Hossain Ahmed and Nafisa Tasneem.
