Multimedia Language Centre

At StFX, students come from a variety of different background with a wide range of language capabilities. Not all students have family and friends to practice speaking a new language outside the classroom, which is why Modern Languages and Celtic Studies departments have created the Multimedia Language Centre (MLC).

What We Do

At the MLC, students are provided with a variety of materials at different levels to be able to practice their listening and speaking skills in conversation with other staff and students. We are a meeting place where students can feel free to explore different cultural backgrounds and enhance their knowledge of a new language.

Resources Available for Staff & Students

Carefully chosen materials, access to communication technologies and well-constructed socio-cultural activities makes language learning engaging and complements the work that students do in the classroom.  

The centre promotes the development of four skills that are essential for the learning of a new language: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Some of the resources we have available to students and educators include:

• A broad selection of videos
• Books on cassette 
• Other educational language software 

By means of the multimedia technology and rich language resources, students can practice each of the four language skills in a social and motivating environment.

Further, educators are encouraged to be inventive and serve the specific linguistic needs or their students. To create engaging learning materials for their students, educators are encouraged to use the MLC’s resources.

Language Lab

The language lab offers an environment and schedule that allows students taking language courses at StFX the opportunity to participate in pre-scheduled facilitated/instructed weekly lab sessions and free time for language students who wish to participate in:

• Individual reviews, 
• Study sessions, 
• Complete assignments, or 
• Conduct research 

The MLC also offers a collection of links presenting a guide to Internet based language and cultural resources for both students and educators of French, Gaelic, German and Spanish interested in language learning and cultural awareness via Internet and multimedia technology.

Audio-Visual Resource Room

The audio-visual resource room serves as:

• An environment for language students to view videos, listen to audio recordings and read books in the language they’re learning
• A study and meeting place where language students can prepare assignments, study and conduct research using the available computers, resources, books, dictionaries, etc. 

MLC Audio Collection

A collection of French audio resources (cassettes, books on cassette and CD-ROMs). 

MLC Video Collection Database.

A collection of English, French, German and Spanish video resources.
