Beyond the Basics: Evaluating, Translating & Supplementary Search Strategies

 

In part 2, we will discuss strategies for evaluating and refining a search strategy, moving a search strategy to other databases, and supplementary search techniques such as reference tracking.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how the quality of a search affects the quality of a review as a whole
  2. Identify potential sources of bias in a search and describe strategies for mitigating them
  3. Use advanced features of databases and tools such as SearchRefinery to edit and refine a search strategy

  4. Translate structured search strategies using different databases such as EBSCO's CINAHL and Proquest's Sociologial Abstracts.

  5. Describe how Polyglot could accelerate search strategy translation processes

  6. Use supplementary search techniques such as reference tracking

Research Skills Boot Camp 2024

The Angus L. Macdonald library presents an in-depth workshop series designed with this summer's research assistants in mind. In this program, librarians will take you through the research process to ensure that you are well-prepared to tackle essential research skills such as: literature reviews, source evaluation, citation management, knowledge synthesis projects and much, much more! 

This year's sessions will run from May 6-8 through live online presentations, via Blackboard Collaborate. 

The Boot Camp sessions are free of charge and registration is open to all StFX students, staff and faculty, with a particular focus on the information management needs of research assistants. Participants can choose individual sessions to attend based on your research needs and areas of interest, and register via the StFX Library Events Page
