Before You Arrive

  • Read the information from the Admissions office. You may discover that the academic system here at StFX is different than what you have experienced in your own country.
  • Make sure your luggage is identified in English with a StFX University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia address.
  • Confirm your residence offer to ensure that you have a room in residence. If you have any questions contact the Residence Office.
  • Make sure you make a copy of your passport and leave it with a family member.
  • Apply for a Study Permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. If you need a Temporary Residence Visa (TRV), visit for more information.
  • Buy travel and medical insurance that will be valid until StFX health insurance plan begins.
  • Keep important documents and money with you when you travel including your acceptance letter from StFX and your Student authorization (VISA letter) to show immigration officials at the port of entry.
  • Remember to bring your personal pin number, email log-in information and your student ID # that was sent to you in your admission package.
  • Bring around $100 cash in case of emergency. Otherwise use travellers cheques. The Currency Exchange Bureau at the airport is only open until 20:00 hours.
  • Arrange for temporary accommodation if you plan to arrive before International Welcome Week. Residence will not be available before this date.
  • The weather in Antigonish, Nova Scotia requires a variety of clothing. If you are from a warmer climate you should wait to buy your warmer clothes in Canada. You will also have an opportunity to buy bedding for your room if you cannot bring these items from home.
