With increasing public interest in food and health, human nutrition is a dynamic field with new career opportunities emerging. StFX Human Nutrition students graduate with a strong scientific background in foods and nutrition, combined with social science perspectives, communication skills and understandings of ways to effect individual and social change.
You will be well equipped to assist individuals, groups, and the population-at-large to achieve their food, nutrition, and health-related goals.
Under the guidance of talented faculty, you will learn through theory–based courses and experiential learning, such as lab and community-based assignments and Service Learning.
Depending upon the choice of courses, StFX Human Nutrition prepares you for careers in areas such as dietetics, education, health promotion, food service management, and research and development in food and nutrition. You may also pursue advanced study in human nutrition, food science, health promotion, adult education, business administration, medicine and other health science professions.
Students interested in pursuing a career in dietetics may apply to the StFX Integrated Dietetic Internship (IDI), a highly competitive, professional program. This is an accredited program recognized by the Partnership for Dietetic Education and Practice (PDEP) and prepares you for eligibility for registration with a provincial dietetics regulatory body.
Graduates may also qualify for entrance to a Dietitians of Canada approved graduate dietetic internship program.
You may choose to pursue a major, advanced major or honours degree. You may also explore StFX’s Cooperative Education Program, offering you an opportunity to gain work experience.
As a Human Nutrition graduate, with a fifth year of study you may also earn a B.Sc. in Human Kinetics degree, opening doors to careers related to nutrition, physical fitness and sport. You may also meet the requirements for admission to the B.Ed. program. Teachers with nutrition and family studies backgrounds are increasingly in demand.
