Professor William Sweet of StFX’s Department of Philosophy recently returned from Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he gave an invited lecture at the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero. One of the characteristics of contemporary Argentinian philosophy is the widespread interest in aesthetics and in the history of science and Dr. Sweet spoke on the theme of “British Idealism and Aesthetic Consciousness.”

While in Buenos Aires, Dr. Sweet was able to meet with colleagues from three of the major Argentinian philosophical associations. The visit also provided an opportunity for Dr. Sweet to present some of his recent research on intercultural philosophy, and to discuss his recent book, What is Intercultural Philosophy?

Through international encounters, an increasing number of scholars is becoming interested in intercultural philosophy, and this will be an underlying theme of the XXIV World Congress of Philosophy, to be held in Beijing in 2018, he said.

Dr. Sweet is a member of the steering committee of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP) that is in charge of that world congress and, while in Buenos Aires, he also met with other members of the Steering Committee to work on organizational matters and on the program.

He later traveled to Washington, DC, where he met with fellow Vice-Presidents of the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy, Vincent Shen (Taiwan/Canada), Joao Vila-Cha (Gregorian University, Rome), and Templeton Prize winner, Tomas Halik (Prague).
