For months, StFX student Alex Miller has been researching renewal energy policy for his thesis. Last week, the fourth year honours political science and aquatic resources student had the opportunity to hear directly from practitioners of what’s he studying when he was selected to attend two major conferences in Vancouver.

Mr. Miller was chosen as a delegate to attend both the Forum for Emerging Environmental Leaders, a one-day conference focused on building the next generation of corporate leaders, policy thinkers and entrepreneurs, as well as Globe 2016, one of North America’s largest and most influential sustainable business leadership summits.
The events ran in parallel with each other, and took place in Vancouver as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canada’s provincial and territorial premiers attended the First Ministers’ Conference, which focused on climate changes. Several government ministers spoke at the Globe 2016 event.
Mr. Miller says attending the conferences was beneficial on many levels from receiving admission to the plenary panels, breakout sessions, keynotes and social activities as well as networking opportunities with political and industry leaders and the chance to connect with young leaders from across Canada.
“For me, it’s a good way to establish a network and to meet like-minded people in the environmental and water industry,” he says.
It was a terrific chance to hear from leaders and top academics in their respective fields, and it was very cool to learn more about his thesis topic in this setting.
“It was very relevant academically for me. There were a lot of discussions on the same topic.”
Mr. Miller says it was nice to see the connections and collaborations going on between government, business and non-profits at the Globe 2016 event, and to see businesses that seemed genuinely interested in becoming more sustainable.
The Forum for Emerging Environmental Leaders was hosted by Leading Change, a Canada-wide movement started by young environmental and sustainability professionals with an objective to address environmental, social and economic issues critical to attaining a sustainable future for the next generation.
The Vancouver conference marked the fourth international event Mr. Miller has attended as a StFX student. He has been a student participant at the World Water Week Conference hosted by the Stockholm International Water Institute, attended the North American Youth for Water Gathering in Quebec City and travelled to the South Korean World Youth Parliament for Water.
Mr. Miller was one of StFX’s inaugural MacBain/Riley Global Engagement Award recipients and is a current recipient of StFX’s Irving Research Mentorship Award.
