A StFX music grad has signed a deal with Warner Music Canada.

Breagh Mackinnon, who graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Music with honours, is part of the band Port Cities, which just signed with the well-known label on June 16.

“We are all super excited about working with the team at Warner Music Canada,” she says. “They seem like an amazing group of people who are really passionate about helping us build our fanbase over the next few months as we get ready to release our album. As a new band, this is such a big step towards building our profile here in Canada,” says Ms. Mackinnon who was well known during her student days at StFX as the singer-songwriter from Sydney, NS won several external musical awards during this time.
She says the band came together about a year ago.
“Carleton Stone, Dylan Guthro and I have been playing music together since we met at the 2011 Gordie Sampson Songcamp. Although we each had own solo projects, over the past several years we found ourselves collaborating more often than not,” she says. “We were sharing stages at festivals and concerts, performing as side musicians in each other’s band, and writing together for recording projects. A little over a year ago we joined forces, and decided to make it official by forming a band, that's when Port Cities got started.”
This winter they finished their first full-length record, produced by Grammy winning songwriter Gordie Sampson. Ms. Mackinnon says manager Sheri Jones has been shopping it around to labels since then.
Ms. Mackinnon says her time at StFX was a good experience. “I had some amazing professors who really helped me hone my skills as a musician, composer and arranger. I feel so lucky to have spent four years studying something I truly loved and was really passionate about.”
