StFX hosts well-attended Chinese New Year celebrations

February 8th, 2017

Chinese New Year celebrations at StFX were a huge success as over 150 people came together on Jan. 28 for a fun evening at Bloomfield Centre organized by the StFX Chinese Student Association.

The cultural event, celebrating the Year of the Rooster, drew a good mix of StFX students, faculty and staff and community members, and featured entertainment, games, and door prizes.

Members of the StFX Chinese Association also cooked seven different dishes for the crowd to sample. As well, a student demonstrated live how to make dumplings, and a video played during the evening explained the Chinese Zodiac.

“Generally speaking, it was a really exciting and successful event. There are many people that I want to thank. It’s a big achievement for the Chinese Student Association. We are so glad to see people had fun in our celebration and can have a good experience in feeling the Chinese culture,” says StFX student and Chinese Student Association president Xinyuan Xu. Assocation vice-presidents Min Yue Fan and Yang Song also worked hard to organize the event.

“Like Christmas, Chinese New Year is one of the biggest days of the year for Chinese people. The main purpose of this event was to make Chinese students feel like they were at home, although they are in Canada, and to create integration between Chinese students and the local community,” says Ms. Xu.

Tickets were offered in town as well, with the hope of increasing the understanding of Chinese culture, she says. “Thanks to the efforts we made on advertising, around 15 people from New Glasgow came to celebrate the Chinese New Year with us, and our tickets were sold out the day before the event.”

She says planning started in January and they had many meetings with StFX Director of Internationalization Marla Gaudet and faculty advisor Opal Leung

The evening’s sponsors included Staples, Little Asia and the Moonlight Restaurant.
