Sense of community, excitement for academic year ahead, highlights annual Employee Breakfast

August 30th, 2017
StFX colleagues gathered together Aug. 30th for fellowship, food, and the chance to kick off another academic year during the annual Employee Breakfast.

It’s our community that sets us apart, StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald told members of StFX faculty and staff as colleagues gathered together Aug. 30th for fellowship, food, and the chance to kick off another academic year during the annual Employee Breakfast held in the Keating Centre.

“This is a remarkable community,” Dr. MacDonald said as he provided words of inspiration and information and welcomed all back to StFX for the start of the 2017-18 academic year.

Dr. MacDonald says the theme for this year’s breakfast – community – emerged from a conversation he had with a prospective student when he shared some of StFX’s assets including the top-quality education offered and all that StFX employees do to make students feel at home.

“If you want to come and join a very special community, that is something we do especially well,” Dr. MacDonald remembers saying. He noted that on later reflection he also realized that community is more than just a place, but rather that it’s really about experiences and the experience of a community.

Dr. MacDonald also told of how recently the Minister of Science, the Hon. Kirsty Duncan, toured campus, meeting with science students and faculty. She was astonished by the opportunities undergraduate students have here, he said.

During his remarks, he also highlighted initiatives for the year head, and thanked all who have worked extremely hard to get ready for this coming academic year.

He spoke of the progress on Mulroney Hall, the renovations to the Oland Centre gym, and renovations to come to the bleachers and an expanded locker room for the football team. All of this work is self-funded, he noted, and is being done through the generous support of alumni and friends. In the coming year, the campus community will hear too of renovations for Nicholson Tower and how StFX is continuing to focus on recruiting and retaining the very best students, he said.

“Thank you everyone. It’s going to be an exciting year.”

Students’ Union president Annie Sirois brought greetings from the student body and outlined the Union’s goals for the year, which fall under three main pillars, advocacy, equity and innovative practices.

She also thanked everyone, all staff, who invest so much in the students the Union represents.

“Thanks for all you do to make this place feel like a home and to provide a premier education. It wouldn’t be the same without you.”

Co-hosts Barry Purcell and Dr. Mary Oxner

StFX business professor Dr. Mary Oxner and electrician Barry Purcell with Facilities Management co-hosted the event.

The theme of this breakfast is community, but really all year, we are all part of the StFX community, and we intersect with many communities, they noted.

A video produced by StFX Communications and Marketing showcased employees from around the campus and the community building that happens in many diverse areas.

Dr. Oxner and Mr. Purcell thanked Sodexo staff for the hot breakfast, for members of the President’s Council for serving the meal and StFX Conference and Media Services for the set up.
