Thursday, February 13, 2020 -
7:30pm to 9:00pm
Location: 2032 Mulroney Hall
Event Type: Lecture

Capstone Lecture by Dr. Sharon Gregory, Art History

Mulroney 2032

The life and biographies of St. Francis find many echoes in the first book of art history every written: Giorgo Vasari's Lives of Renaissance Artists. Francis's deeds, character, and important places associated with his life are named or implied in the biographies of artists as diverse as Giotto and Raphael, Leonardo and Michelangelo. This talk seeks to determine the biographical and literary purposes behind Vasari's uses in artists' lives of the saintly Francis: rebuilder of the Church, lover of nature, morifier of the flesh, vernacular poet, exemplar of humility yet recipient of exaltation.

All are welcome to this lecture.
