Abstract: Drawing on her work with children and adolescents and the broader resilience literature, Dr. Hadfield will present on the factors and processes that promote mental health and wellbeing among children who have been exposed to substantial adversity. She will describe the state of the research on resilience at multiple levels across the biopsychosocial-ecological system, using her research projects as examples of how resilience can be understood and can best be promoted. Specifically, she will discuss two projects 1) a recently concluded longitudinal project in Jordan which used survey, physiological, cognitive, and genetic data to examine Syrian refugee and Jordanian non-refugee youth; and 2) an ongoing project with Syrian refugee adolescents in Jordan to examine what methods may be best to measure resilience among young people living in humanitarian crisis contexts. Finally, the lecture will finish with implications of the role of education in promoting resilience during public health emergencies, with a specific focus on how this applies to COVID-19.

Bio: Dr. Kristin Hadfield is an Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology and the Trinity Centre for Global Health at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin. Dr Hadfield's research focuses on how people’s resilience, wellbeing, and mental health can best be promoted. She is particularly interested in what makes children and adolescents thrive when faced with adverse or challenging contexts.
