Capstone Lecture given by Dr. David Garbary, Department of Biology. Ernst Haeckel was one of the most important and controversial of the proponents of evolutionary thought, proposing a synthesis of Darwinian and Lamarckian principles and the eventually discredited "biogenetic law" (that ontogeny recapitualates phylogeny). This is the fourth Capstone lecture sponsored by the Humanities Colloquium in this academic year. It is intended for a general audience and will be of interest to anyone interested in the history of ideas, biology, and the history of science. All are welcome.
