The Brian Mulroney Institute of Government Fellows Lectures Presents

Dr. David Young, StFX Faculty of Education

The passage of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act in 1988 provided explicit statutory expression for the policy of official multiculturalism. Over the ensuing three decades, a struggle between old and new constitutional values surfaced in various Charter cases, many concerned with education. The earliest cases, which dealt largely with religious funding and accommodation, have been collectively referred to as a “quintet.” The lecture will examine the cases that comprise the quintet. As well, attention will be devoted to looking beyond the quintet by discussing recent legal and policy developments within the sphere of education.

The event is open to StFX students, faculty, and staff. COVID-19 protocols will be in place. The lecture will also be livestreamed.
