Christian Culture Lecture Series / The Ethical and Spiritual Foundations of Sport / by Dr Jim Parry (Leeds/Charles University, Prague)

Thursday, March 2, 2017 -
7:30pm to 9:30pm
Lecture

Modern sport was invented in the context and image of liberal democracy, which is itself an expression of the moral and theological universalism at the heart of the Judeo-Christian tradition. These moral, political and religious foundations are often ‘hidden’ within the social practices and the social institutions that constitute those opportunities for expression that are available to us all in our contemporary everyday lives. Since often ‘hidden’, they are also often forgotten, and this is the source of corruption, lack of integrity, and loss of opportunity for the expression of our spirituality. The task of this first lecture, then, is to lay bare what sport is; and thus to reveal its defining and foundational values and virtues. This will be an exercise in conceptual analysis and in value identification. Dr Jim Parry is a Professor at the University of Leeds (UK) and at Department of Philosophy, History and Sociology at Charles University in Prague. He is a Professor of the Philosophy of Sport
