Scholars have shown an increase in racial discrimination and hate crimes since Trump’s election—what is dubbed the “Trump effect.” The Pew Research Center found that nearly half of Latinxs report that discrimination based on their ethnicity and/or race has worsened since Trump’s election. While it is clear that Latinxs are among the targets of nativism, how Latinxs experience and respond to this increasingly hostile climate remains in question. Two findings emerge from interviews with 40 Latinx young adults ages 18-25 in Chicago.
