Must Have Information

Admission

All University program applications are handled by the Admission Office. For more information please visit www.mystfx.ca/services/admissions or email admit@stfx.ca.

Your StFX Account

Each StFX student has a personal account with the university. Your account number is your Student Identification Number. You can make payments to your account at the Business Office (MacKinnon Hall, 3rd floor) using a credit card, debit card or cash.

Each StFX student begins the academic year with a $12.00 credit for photocopying. If you exceed this, copies will be charged to your StFX student account.

If you would like to make advanced payment to StFX via international bank transfer before your arrival, you will need to provide your name and StFX ID# (i.e., 200607774). The transfer can be done by telephone at 902-867-4800 or by mail at the following address:

Bank of Nova Scotia
255 Main Street
PO Box 1270
Antigonish, Nova Scotia B2G 2W5
Canada

Bank Transit Number: 40113002
StFX Account Number: 401130000515

If you have any questions regarding this process please contact Pati Myette, Accounting Services at 902-867-3719 or pjmyette@stfx.ca

Welcome Week

Welcome Week is a traditional social week held the first week of September, a time for all new international students to have some fun with their new international family. After being picked up at the airport by our prearranged university shuttle service, you’ll arrive on campus, find out everything you need to know, meet new faces from all over, and be assigned to a team with an experienced international student.

Student Authorization (Study Permit)

All international students require official Student Authorization to enter Canada and to remain in the country as a student. It is your responsibility to obtain this authorization or to renew or extent it before it expires. If at any time you wish to change the terms of your authorization, you must inform the Canada Immigration Centre (CIC) by calling 888-242-2100 or visiting www.cic.gc.ca. Failure to take these steps can result in your removal from Canada.

All instructions, information and application forms are available online at:  www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/extend-student.asp. Any questions on the status of your application should be made to the CIC Call Centre at 1-888-242-2100.

Employment Authorization (Student Work Permit)

As an international student at StFX you are permitted to work on the university campus. If you are registered as a full-time student and have a valid Student Authorization, you do not need Employment Authorization to work on campus. For information about available work opportunities, please consult the Student Placement Office at 902-867-2442, send a fax to 902-867-5138, or visit the StFX Students’ Union website at www.mystfx.ca/services/csecd/about.htm.

Information on the new Off-Campus Work Permit Program for International students can be found at www.cic.gc.ca/english/press/06/0601-e.html.

Applications for the off-campus work permit are available at www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work.asp.

You may now apply for your off-campus work permit online at the CIC website, however you must still make an appointment to see Brenda Berthiaume regarding the verification form. Brenda can be reached at bberth@stfx.ca. Please also note that after you have completed your work permit application forms, you must set up an appointment with Brenda to have the verification form signed.

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

A social insurance number or SIN is a nine-digit number which registers you with the Government of Canada. Everyone who works or plans to work in Canada must have a SIN. You will also find it helpful to have a SIN as a form of identification. If you wish to open a bank account, you may need to provide a SIN, and, if you receive a scholarship, you will need to provide the university with your social insurance number. Application forms for a SIN are available at the International Students Office or the Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) Office on Main Street. You can also call HRDC at 902-863-7010 or visit www.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/sin/nas2120e.shtml.
