To the StFX Community,
Beginning today, we are introducing a new emergency notification system to the StFX Community. We call it StFX Alerts.
StFX Alerts is a notification service that allows registrants to opt-in to receive emergency messages via text, email (i.e. can be a different address than your StFX-issued email), and/or voice message. The system will be an addition to, and does not replace, the tools currently used to communicate to campus -- use of campus-wide email, StFX social networks, local media, etc.
Enrolment is not mandatory; however, we do encourage all members of the community to register.
Why should I register for StFX Alerts?
By registering for StFX Alerts you will receive important time-sensitive information right away by having the alert sent to your personal electronic device (cell phone, smartphone, etc.) via text messaging, voice mail or email.
It is important to note that StFX Alerts WILL ONLY BE SENT IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. This includes scenarios or situations that affect the StFX Community, such as campus closures or potentially dangerous situations. Any message that does not meet the criteria of an emergency scenario will NOT be distributed via StFX Alerts.
Registration is simple. Please go to http://alerts.stfx.ca and click and sign up.

Frequently Asked Questions:
How does it work?
StFX Alerts is an opt-in notification system for which members of the StFX Community register to receive emergency alerts via text, email, and/or voice messages.
It is important to note that StFX Alerts will ONLY BE SENT IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. This includes scenarios or situations that affect the StFX Community, such as campus closures or potentially dangerous situations.
You may register for StFX Alerts at any time. Your information will remain in the system for one year. Beginning this September, registrants will be asked to confirm that they still want to receive StFX Alerts and have their information within the notification system. Registrants who do not confirm within the designated period of time will be purged from the system and must re-enrol should they wish to receive future StFX Alerts.
If I sign up for text, voice and email, will I get multiple messages?
Yes, you will receive messages to each of the contact points you enter, depending on what options you select when you register for StFX Alerts. The more information you provide the more likely you will get the message.
Can I change my mobile phone number or other contact details within the system?
Yes. Simply go to http://alerts.stfx.ca to manage and update your information.
Do I need to install software on my phone?
No. Your mobile phone plan will need to accept text messages to work properly
Do I have to pay for the texts I receive from StFX Alerts?
There is no cost to enrol. However, if you elect to accept text messages, you may incur a cost for incoming text messages depending on your mobile phone plan. (I.e. standard text rates may apply. Please check with your provider.)
When should I expect to receive notifications?
The StFX Alerts system will be tested periodically over the course of the academic year. During a test you will receive a test message to ensure the system is operating properly and users are receiving the messages. Other than those test messages, StFX Alerts will only notify you when there is an emergency situation on campus.
My mobile phone does not have texting enabled. Can I still receive alerts?
Yes. You can still sign up to receive voice mail and email alerts.
Will I still get emergency notifications if I don't sign up or have a cell phone?
Yes, notifications will continue to be sent to your StFX email, as well notifications will be posted on the StFX University website, Facebook, and Twitter.
Will my contact information be shared with others?
No. The information that you provide is private and will not be shared. It will be used only by StFX University for emergency communication purposes.
What should I do when I get a message?
There are three things you should do when you receive a StFX Alert:
1. Read the message. Do not ignore it!
2. Alert other people. It’s very important to spread the word of the emergency notification.
3. Follow the instructions given carefully.
