StFX welcomes new Director, Student Life

StFX is pleased to welcome Corinna Fitzgerald to campus as the Director, Student Life. Ms. Fitzgerald started in her position, formerly known as the Dean of Students, on Jan. 25.

She comes to StFX most recently from McMaster University where she was employed as judicial affairs coordinator, and prior to this as residence life coordinator. While at McMaster, Ms. Fitzgerald, a native of Baie Verte, NL, completed a Master of Arts degree in globalization, social justice and labour studies. She also holds a Master of Education in student development from Memorial University and an undergraduate degree in psychology from Grenfell College – Memorial University.

Ms. Fitzgerald says she’s excited to take on the responsibilities of her position at StFX and to help promote student life and student success “so that students get the most out of their experiences.”

“I loved university, and really I haven’t left. Since 1994, I’ve either been in school or worked at a university. I think it keeps you going, it can be challenging, but it’s very rewarding. And I’m excited to work with the team here, at an institution that focuses on students, and I think that’s what StFX is known for.”

Her responsibilities include the Student Career Centre, four student advising offices (LGBT, Aboriginal, International and Black Students), as well as judicial affairs. She is also involved with Orientation and other aspects of student life.

Ms. Fitzgerald says one of her focuses will be on helping ease transitions for students, as they travel from first year through to fourth and encounter various stages in their journey, from moving off-campus, to creating leadership and civic opportunities, and helping promote academic success.

The university years, she says, are such a time for personal growth and she is excited to be able to help students along that journey. “It’s such an opportunity for students to try different things, to join a club or volunteer for something they might normally not, and to figure themselves out.”
