Members of the campus community came together to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 18, 2010 with a ceremony in the MacKay Room, Bloomfield Centre. The King holiday honours the life and contributions of America’s greatest champion of racial justice and equality, the leader who not only dreamed of a society of equality for all, but who also led a movement that achieved historic reforms to help make it a reality.

The event included the presentation of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award to recipient Jessica Gray, B.Sc. Nursing Program, and a keynote address from Henderson Paris, founder of the Run Against Racism in New Glasgow, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Mr. Paris’s topic was “Making a Difference One Stride at a Time.”

Several participants took to the podium to offer their perspectives including student Alberto Rodrigues who gave a moving talk on how we can all contribute to building ‘The Promised Land’ and StFX Human Rights and Equity Advisor Marie Brunelle who also spoke on how working together we can make Martin Luther King’s dream a reality.

The event was sponsored by Black Student Advising and Brothers and Sisters of The African Diaspora.
