In March, StFX adult education professor Dr. Carole Roy found herself in the enviable position of sitting in the sold-out audience of a major human rights film festival in Montreal, watching her film, Les Super-Mémés – a documentary about the Raging Grannies French-speaking chapter in Montreal – premiere.

After five hours of careful deliberation, three independent judges named Asha Pieper, a third year music major from Calgary, AB, as this year’s recipient of the Angus F. Macgillivray Art Bursary, valued at $1,000. The award is designed to encourage young artists and is named in honour of the late Angus F. Macgillivray who was a faculty member of the StFX fine arts department.

St. Francis Xavier University earth sciences professor Dr. Lisa Kellman has been awarded a second $500,000 five-year term of the prestigious Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Environmental Sciences-Biogeochemistry for her excellence in this research area.

The opportunities to learn at StFX’s eighth annual Student Research Day on March 25 were amazing. Visitors to the Keating Centre’s conference rooms had a chance to talk with StFX students on research projects running the gamut from the correlation between food and Saturday morning children’s TV, to understanding board dynamics, to the male nursing student experiences in learning to care for a breastfeeding family. In all, 91 students from 14 academic disciplines presented their research.

Kelsey O’Brien’s work on her thesis has certainly paid off. On March 6, the fourth year StFX earth sciences student won the best presentation award, based on her thesis, at the Environment meeting of the Atlantic Provinces Council for the Sciences (APICS).

James Hudson, a fourth year honours biology student from Miramichi, NB, has won the top oral presentation award at the annual Atlantic Undergraduate Biology Conference held in Fredericton, NB from March 5-7, 2010.

StFX’s annual Student Research Day continues to grow by leaps and bounds. When the eighth annual event takes place on Thursday, March 25 in the Keating Conference Rooms A, B and C, it will see 91 student presenters from 14 academic disciplines ranging from anthropology and aquatic resources to Celtic Studies, business, nutrition and environmental sciences.

StFX’s X-Debate team had a most successful weekend at the Atlantic Debating Championships at Dalhousie University March 5-7 including a first place finish for the team of Ryan Blood and Hilary Fetlham.

The Celtic Travel Bursary Committee wishes to announce that it is now accepting applications for the 2010 Celtic Travel Bursary. The Celtic Travel Bursary was established several years ago to assist individuals in Nova Scotia interested in Celtic culture to travel to Scotland, Ireland, Wales or Brittany to further develop their knowledge of Celtic culture. To date, more than 40 individuals have been awarded travel bursaries.

St. Francis Xavier University extends its congratulations to Earth Sciences Professor Dr. Brendan Murphy for being awarded the nationally acclaimed Killam Research Fellowship.
The Killam Research Fellowship is presented to established scholars who have demonstrated outstanding research. The fellowships carry a value of $70,000 per year for two years, which supports the scholar’s studies.

A fourth year StFX political science student looking into low-carbon economies in Canada, Sweden and Denmark will have the opportunity to present his research at an international conference in Vancouver this month.

High Commissioner of Kenya on hand as education students leave for international field practicum
As 14 StFX education students and two recent grads readied to leave for Kenya for six weeks of international field experience, no less than the High Commissioner of the Republic of Kenya to Canada was on hand to wish them well in their teaching experience.

StFX philosophy professor Dr. William Sweet was recently featured in The Gulf Today and in Emirates Business concerning a lecture he gave in the Emirate of Sharjah on the philosophical implications of parental licensing. While in the Emirates, Dr Sweet was a guest of the American University of Sharjah.
