    New Grad Students in Marine Ecology Lab

    Dr. Ricardo Scrosati’s Marine Ecology Lab in the Department of Biology has recruited a PhD student from Egypt, Ehab El Belely, and a M.Sc. student from British Columbia, Elise Keppel.

    Sam Mason, Alia Hack elected Students’ Union president and vice-president

    Sam Mason, a third year environmental sciences student from Mermaid, PEI, and Alia Hack, a third year psychology student from Stellarton, NS, have been elected StFX’s 2010-11 Students’ Union president and vice-president, respectively.

    Aboriginal X Tour a positive experience for Mi’kmaq youth

    A group of 23 Mi’kmaq youth, Grade 9-12 students from the Paqtnkek First Nation, were welcomed to the StFX campus on Feb. 15 for a first hand, day-long introduction to university life as part of the Aboriginal X Tour hosted by the StFX Aboriginal Student Advisor’s Office in partnership with the Aboriginal Nursing Student Seminar Option.

    StFX student named 2010 Student Entrepreneur Nova Scotia Champion

    Jeremy Flynn, a full-time StFX business student from the Halifax area and owner of Flynnweb, has been named the 2010 Student Entrepreneur Nova Scotia Champion by national charitable organization, Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) and program supporter, CIBC.

    Earth Sciences professor Dr. Dave Risk places second, receives $40,000 in I-3 Technology Start-Up Competition

    An innovative system for real-life monitoring of carbon dioxide emissions from underground carbon capture and storage facilities has earned StFX Earth Sciences professor Dr. Dave Risk yet another award. And this time it comes in the business field. Dr. Risk and his group placed second in their zone for a business plan concept for a company working with oil and gas companies at Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) sites, in Innovacorp’s provincial I-3 Technology Start-Up Competition, an innovative competition to identify and support high potential Nova Scotia knowledge-based businesses.

    Physics students have great success at Atlantic Undergraduate Physics and Astronomy Conference

    StFX physics students had great success at the Atlantic Undergraduate Physics and Astronomy Conference (AUPAC) 2010, which was held at Acadia University in Wolfville, NS on February 5-7, 2010.

    Sodexo’s Cooking with Chef Mike a huge hit: Cooking classes help students learn a life skill and have fun doing it

    StFX students had a wonderful treat recently, and it was more than just the Caesar salad, steak Diane and peppered strawberries on their plates. It was a chance to participate in Cooking with Chef Mike, a Sodexo marketing initiative that has proven to be a tremendous hit.

    StFX is pleased to welcome Corinna Fitzgerald to campus as the Director, Student Life. Ms. Fitzgerald started in her position, formerly known as the Dean of Students, on Jan. 25.

    Call for Scholarly Teaching Grants launched again by Faculty Development Committee

    In 2009, Dr. Erin Austin, chair of StFX’s Faculty Development Committee, met with Academic Vice President & Provost Dr. Mary McGillivray to discuss the possibility of offering three Scholarly Teaching Grants valued at $500 each to assist faculty members in developing an innovative teaching idea. The first round of grants was launched in March 2009, with awards presented to Dr. Doris Gillis, human nutrition; Dr. Riley Olstead, sociology; and Dr. Donna Trembinski, history.

    Book launch for Dr. Jonathan Langdon

    Members of the campus community joined with Dr. Jonathan Langdon at the StFX Art Gallery on Friday, Jan. 29 to celebrate the launch of Indigenous Knowledges, Development and Education (Sense Publishers, Cultural Studies in Education series, 2009), an edited collection which draws together insights about indigenous knowledges, education and development studies.
