Welcome to Physics at StFX, where students explore the fundamental properties of matter and energy. Physics is about creating precise descriptions of the way they behave. It is about analyzing the problem, identifying the unknown and obtaining solutions.
Career Options
There is a tremendous need for professionals with the ability to decipher the answers and come up with better ones; this skill will open a world of opportunity for students interested in teaching, research (both within the government and private sector) medical imaging, dentistry and many more areas. In the past, graduates have pursued careers in aviation, geophysics and oceanography.
The First Year
In first year, students normally take Physics 100 as an introduction to mechanics, heat, electricity, magnetism, waves, optics and modern physics. The course includes some applications of physics to biological problems. Many also take chemistry, math and two arts courses.
Degree Choices
The Physics Department offers honours, advanced major, joint advanced major and major programs. Joint advanced major and honours programs combine Physics with mathematics, earth sciences, chemistry or biology. A joint advanced major is offered in business administration.
