Welcome to Philosophy at StFX, where students study the insights of Plato, Aristotle, Kant and others who have become synonymous with philosophical thought. But the study of Philosophy is not merely the study of great minds; rather, it embraces the idea that great minds offer the best guide to the truth concerning the most important questions of our time.
Career Options
Students study Philosophy primarily because they want a comprehensive education. Graduates in Philosophy, however, have been very successful in law, journalism, medicine, theology, business and government. Honours students tend to get hooked, and often go on to graduate programs in Philosophy.
The First Year
In their first year, students take Philosophy 100, which presents a history of Philosophy from the ancient Greeks to contemporary thought, and also includes an introduction to logic. The study of Philosophy is conceptually challenging, but it helps students to engage in independent thought.
Degree Choices
Students can do a major, advanced major or an honours degree in Philosophy. Philosophy is also very popular choice as a minor, as it helps to make sense of many other disciplines in the arts and sciences.
