Welcome to Modern Languages at StFX, where students can learn French, Spanish and German in courses that examine the relationship between language and culture. The department offers studies in language instruction, culture, effective writing and literature across the centuries.
The First Year
First year would normally be a selection of liberal arts courses combined with introductory courses in German or Spanish or level-appropriate courses in French. Students may choose to study more than one language if they desire.
Why StFX?
Most StFX Modern Languages professors hold doctorate degrees and teach small classes. Students can pursue exciting opportunities through the Service Learning program—a one-of-a-kind option for students to put what they’ve learned in the classroom to effective use in the community and around the globe. The department also offers a proficiency test for students who want to have their ability in French officially recognized.
Career Options
Having a second language opens doors in all career areas, and StFX graduates have gone on to rewarding careers in education, law, tourism, public service, business, international relations, diplomacy, graduate studies and medicine, to name but a few.
Degree Choices
With major, joint major, advanced major and honours programs in French, there is significant emphasis placed on Canadian and Acadian literature and cinema. Students can also pursue a major in Spanish, conditional upon doing one year abroad. Select courses are also offered in German.
Each year, Modern Languages students at StFX receive awards from the French, Swiss, Argentinean and German embassies. As well, StFX offers students the chance to live and learn in France or Mexico through the Junior Year Abroad program.
