Welcome to English at StFX, where students examine the human experience through a survey of literature that spans the ages. From the study of contemporary science fiction to the poetry of centuries past, students develop well-rounded writing and analytical skills that have applications in countless career and post-graduate fields.
Career Options
With honours, advanced major and major programs at the Bachelor of Arts level, the English Department produces thinkers with excellent reading comprehension and writing and speaking skills, making them well-suited to virtually any career that relies on strong communication abilities.
The First Year

Students analyze a range of writers from early periods to the 21st-century, including works by authors such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Donne, Milton, Haywood, Dickenson, Brontë, Yeats, Woolf, Atwood, and DeLillo
Degree Choices
Students can major in English or pursue an advanced major or honours degree with a subsidiary in history, modern languages, philosophy, Celtic studies, women’s studies, religious studies, sociology, or anthropology.
Why StFX?
Professors get to know their students by name and offer the kind of mentoring and one-on-one assistance that will help them achieve their full potential. Students meet with their professors to discuss assignments and exams, and are involved in literary activities that take place outside the classroom. From participation in conferences, to discussions with visiting writers and scholars, to literary publications and readings, faculty are actively involved in their students’ academic programs.
