Academics: Faculty of Arts

Adult Education

StFX offers a Master of Adult Education (MAdEd) program with an optional specialization in Community Development. We are Canada's first self-directed master's program offered primarily through distance education.

Career Options

Our program has a professional development focus and is of interest to candidates from a wide variety of career areas such as community development, adult basic literacy, Aboriginal education, human resource development, vocational education, community health promotion, and post-secondary education. Students choose the program as a way to build on knowledge and skills in their practice of adult education.

Why this Program?

This program offers a unique opportunity to study part time with first rate faculty. Our distance format allows for flexibility, and our self-directed format allows for individually focused research (e.g., health education, ESL, and training). Many of our students carry out practice-based projects in their own communities to find solutions to everyday problems. Faculty members mentor students through this flexible and academically rigorous program. This program provides an innovative way to complete graduate studies.

Degree Content and Process

The MAdEd program is divided into three components, beginning with an intensive 3-week residential Foundations Institute during which students become familiar with the program. In consultation with a faculty advisor, students design an individualized learning and research plan. There are several program phases that are completed at a distance. The program concludes with the option of a thesis or non-thesis exam.

Graduates

To date, the department boasts over 500 graduates. In addition to every province and territory in Canada, our students come from countries such as the United States, England, Nigeria, Ethiopia, China, India, and Egypt.
