Celtic Department Lecture: "Sure it's the same as back home"

Séamus MacFloinn, 2009-10 visiting Irish lecturer in the Department of Celtic Studies, will present the talk "'Sure it's the same as back home' An irish speaker's observations on the current state of the Irish Gaelic language in Ireland and the view from Nova Scotia," focusing on contemporary Irish language politics and reflections on his experience regarding Scottish Gaelic in Nova Scotia. Dr. Kim Paffenroth, Iona College, will speak on "Zombies and Dante's Inferno." This presentation considers how contemporary zombie literature and films offer us insights into Dante's Inferno, by giving us a secularized,almost "demythologized" version of his ideas of sin and damnation. We'll look at the nature of sin, the relative weight of the various sins, and consider how modern versions of Dante's story can adapt his vision.
