Service Learning

Education comes to life once it’s taken outside the classroom, and the earlier you have that chance, the earlier you’ll come to appreciate your field of study in a whole new way. A unique part of the education you get at StFX is the opportunity for what we call Service Learning— experiencing your area of study in the real world.

Pioneered at StFX in 1996, Service Learning builds on the university's tradition of social responsibility and brings a philosophy of outreach to the undergraduate experience.  Service Learning takes students out of the classroom to work alongside others in solving real-world challenges.

"Providing opportunities for Service Learning in my classes benefits the students in terms of real-life knowledge gained. It also provides an opportunity for students to get to know more about themselves, which is something that you simply can’t learn from a book.”

Angie Thompson, Professor, Human Kinetics
St. Francis Xavier University

We also have a long-standing tradition of social responsibility and community outreach at StFX. Our Service Learning programs satisfy both goals by combining experiential learning, academic study and community service. What you learn inside the classroom is important. What you learn outside of it is irreplaceable.
